Eagles’ 2019 Division Includes Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland

At the WPSL’s yearly meetings on Jan. 25-26, the league announced its official divisions for 2019. Columbus Eagles FC is part of the six-team Ohio Valley division that includes Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, Detroit, and Ann Arbor.

Columbus will play each team twice (home and away) in a 10-match WPSL regular season. The Eagles’ full schedule will be released very soon, once dates and times are finalized. Columbus already announced it will play a 3-match preseason against Ohio Dominican University (March 31), Ohio University (April 7), and Otterbein University (April 14).

Including the Eagles, the Ohio Valley division is as follows:

– AAFC Lumberjills: Ann Arbor rejoins the WPSL for the second consecutive season. The Eagles beat the Lumberjills 2-0 in last season’s opening match.

– Cincinnati Sirens FC: The Sirens and Eagles face off in the Valley division for the fourth straight year. The Eagles are unbeaten against the Sirens in WPSL play since 2016. That streak includes two wins (2016, 2017) against Cincinnati at MAPFRE Stadium.

– Cleveland Ambassadors: The defending Valley division and East region champions return to defend their title. The Eagles were the only team to take points from Cleveland in 2018 after a 3-goal second half earned Columbus a 3-3 draw.

– Dayton Dutch Lions: The Dutch Lions are back in the WPSL after taking 2018 off. In 2017, Columbus and Dayton split the season series. US national team star Rose Lavelle played for Dayton in 2016.

– Motor City FC: Detroit finished third in the Valley division in 2018 and was the only team to beat Columbus in the regular season.

In 2018, the Eagles finished second in the Valley division with a 5-1-2 record. Columbus conceded just one goal at home and earned its first-ever road victory (a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh).
