Eagles Fight Back to Get a Draw in Cleveland

Columbus fought back in a big way Sunday. After conceding three goals in the first half at Ambassadors Cleveland, the Eagles staged one of the great comebacks in club history. Micaela Powers, Amber Kern, and Erin Brockway all scored in the second half and Columbus earned a 3-3 draw with Cleveland to stay unbeaten in the WPSL. 

Powers – who got the start in central defense – scored her first Eagles goal in the 50th minute to get Columbus on the board. Kern followed it up in the 62nd minute with her first of the season. Brockway scored in the 78th minute to level the score at three and secure a point for Columbus. 

Cleveland had taken the lead in the 13th minute on an Anna Rico goal, and then the Ambassadors followed that up with a goal a minute later by Emily Ogle. The home team added a goal in the 44th minute by Kayla Fischer to take a commanding lead, but the Eagles picked up their intensity in the second half, found some rhythm, and stayed strong defensively to get a vital point.

With the draw, Eagles’ head coach Daniel Seiffert remains unbeaten (4-1-0) in matches where he’s been in charge. Kern’s goal was her first WPSL goal for the club since the start of the 2017 season. Brockway had returned to the Eagles lineup after suffering a wrist injury during the offseason. Sunday was her first start for Columbus in roughly a calendar year.

The Eagles stay atop the Valley division of the WPSL and now have seven points from a possible nine. Cleveland sits in second place with four points from two matches.

Columbus returns home this coming Sunday (June 3) to play Detroit’s Motor City FC in another huge league matchup. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Otterbein University’s Memorial Stadium. Tickets are on sale now for just $10 and will be available at the gate of the event.
